Atoms are the tiny, basic building blocks of ordinary matter.
A molecule is formed when two or more atoms bond together.
Nano-technology is about very small things, like atoms and
molecules.

The atomic number of the element krypton is 36. How many protons do you
think it has in its nucleus (& how many electrons)?
Match these elements with their atomic number: 8 6 or 1
Hydrogen (H) ________ Oxygen (O) _______ Carbon (C) _______
What do you think are the atomic numbers for:
Calcium (Ca) _______ Iron (Fe) ________ Gold (Au) _______

What Type of Atom |
* Atoms are the microscopic, basic building blocks of ordinary matter.
* Atoms are composed of particles called protons, electrons and neutrons.
* The "type of atom" (and the atomic number at the top of each box in the periodic table)
"depends on the number of protons" found in its nucleus (center).
* An element is a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom. Each atom is a
building block of the element.

Bond With Me |
*A molecule is formed when two or more atoms bond together.
*A covalent bond is formed when electrons are shared between atoms. An ionic bond is
formed when electrons are exchanged from one atom to the other.
*A compound is a molecule that contains at least two different elements. The molecule is
the building block of a compound, just like the atom is the building block of the element.

* Nano means 1 divided by 1,000,000,000 (i.e. one billionth).
*Nanotechnology is about very small things - things that are too small to see – like
atoms and molecules.
*Nanokids are kids, but one billion times smaller!!

"Kids love it. Little kids and big kids. My college students ask, “Why can’t we
learn like this?” It can be used at almost any level. It’s fun!"
-Dr James Tour, Rice University
"Learning about the NanoKids has opened up a world of possibility for real
children who ordinarily would rather not study biology, chemistry, or physics!"

Bond With Me |
"The students really go crazy over the music that's woven into the program...
The end result was remarkable scores on exams testing the children's retention of these basic scientific concepts."

Bonding is about...
a) elections b) Alex Smith c) electrons d) elephants
Can you name an elephant element with an atomic number between 40 – 46 ?
(Hint: Look closely at the vid @1:35)
There are 90 naturally occurring types of atoms, but
scientists in labs have been able to make about 25 more!
Why do you think they are making more?

All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are
compounds!
...I think ;-)
