Life Science Chapter 4b - Summary Notes
The cell cycle
- In the time needed to do this dance, you body will have made millions of new cells.
- Cells have different phases of growth, called the cell cycle, like kids to teenagers to adults.
- A cell divides in two to make new cells, but first in needs to make a copy of its DNA, the master blueprint of life.
- DNA can be very large, so it is organized into “chromosomes” to keep it neatly packaged.
- Some simple bacteria cells, called “prokaryotic” cells, can undergo “binary fission” to divide in two and each half keeps a copy of the DNA.
- More complex cells, called “eukaryotic” cells, found in plants and animals, also make copies of their DNA before the divide. Now they undergo “mitosis” or the “pulling apart” and then they undergo “cytokinesis” or “splitting into two” new cells, where each half keeps a copy of the DNA. In that way, the two cells have identical DNA so that they can grow and develop in the same way.
- Remember, the DNA is the blueprint for RNA and RNA is the blueprint for proteins, and proteins are nature’s nanomachines that build all cells and therefore everything in us. So DNA is the master blueprint and the code for all new construction.
